Whole Foods Recalls Guacamole, Salsa and Prepared Foods Over Salmonella Risk

Recall involves dozens of products containing jalapeños linked to a multistate Salmonella investigation.

Whole Foods Market has recalled dozens of guacamole, salsa, pico de gallo and prepared-food products because jalapeños used in the products may be contaminated with Salmonella.

The recall was announced Wednesday, Aug. 12, in connection with a multistate Salmonella outbreak being investigated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

According to the FDA, the affected Whole Foods products contain jalapeños supplied by Coast Citrus Distributors. Investigators have identified a grower in Sinaloa, Mexico, that supplied Coast Citrus as the potential source of the outbreak.

The recall includes numerous varieties of Whole Foods guacamole, including mild, spicy, roasted corn and pomegranate guacamole, along with pico de gallo, mango pineapple salsa, tomatillo salsa, heirloom tomato salsa, peach salsa and other refrigerated dips and prepared foods.

Some prepared turkey burger meals containing a recalled mango-pineapple condiment are also included.

The affected products carry Best Before or Best By dates ranging from Aug. 7 through Aug. 16, depending on the product.

The products were sold online and in Whole Foods Produce and Prepared Foods departments in Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Missouri, Kentucky and Ohio.

California stores are not included in the Whole Foods recall announced Wednesday.

The recall is part of a larger investigation involving fresh jalapeños supplied by Coast Citrus Distributors. Other products containing the affected peppers have also been recalled.

Salmonella can cause fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare cases, the bacteria can enter the bloodstream and cause more serious illness. Young children, older adults and people with weakened immune systems face an increased risk of severe infection.

Whole Foods said no illnesses have been reported in connection with its recalled products as of Wednesday.

Consumers who purchased one of the recalled products should not eat it. Whole Foods advises customers to discard the product or return to a Whole Foods Market store with a valid receipt for a full refund.
