LA County Sheriff’s Deputy Struck and Killed in Cerritos

On Saturday, August 5, 2017 at approximately 2:40 p.m., the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department tragically lost one of our own. While off-duty and in his personal vehicle, Deputy Michael Haak had stopped on the right shoulder of the I-605, north of South Street presumably experiencing vehicle trouble. Initial statements obtained at the scene indicate Deputy Haak walked onto the traffic side of his vehicle and was struck by a motorist traveling north in the right lane.

Deputy Haak was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The other motorist, a 54 year old Buena Park man, stopped at the scene and is cooperating with investigators. Intoxication is not believed to be a factor in the collision.

Deputy Haak began his career with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department in the fall of 1988. During his 29 years with the Sheriff’s Department, he worked a variety of assignments. His most recent assignment was at Lakewood Sheriff’s Station. He is survived by his wife, three children and his sister.

Lakewood Station Captain, James Wolak, stated the following while speaking to the personnel who worked with Deputy Haak, “I know many of you worked with Mike and words alone will never be able to ease the overwhelming grief you must be feeling. Please know that Mike loved being a deputy sheriff and lived a very full life. I was proud to witness the overwhelming response from Lakewood Station in support of him and his family. We have Department personnel with his family offering support during this challenging time. As we work through this devastating loss, our thoughts go out to the families and all those affected by this tragedy.”

The traffic investigation is being handled by California Highway Patrol, Santa Fe Springs Office

 CERRITOS >> An off-duty Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy was struck and killed in Cerritos by a passing vehicle on the 605 Freeway after the deputy stopped his vehicle in the emergency lane, California Highway Patrol officers said Sunday.

The CHP said in a crash report that its initial investigation indicates that the deputy was “presumably experiencing vehicle trouble” and walked into a traffic lane on the right side of the six-lane northbound 605 Freeway, between South Street and Artesia Boulevard.

The crash was at 2:45 p.m. Saturday.

The other driver, a 54-year-old man from Buena Park, stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators, the CHP said in a crash report.

The Sheriff’s Department confirmed only that a deputy had been killed in a traffic crash, but the CHP reported the deputy was off-duty, assigned to the nearby Lakewood Station and was in his personal vehicle.

Neither agency released his name Sunday.

“Initial statements obtained at the scene indicate the deputy walked onto the traffic side of the vehicle and was struck by a motorist traveling north in the right lane,” according to a CHP crash report.

Paramedics rushed the deputy to an area hospital, where he later died from his injuries, the CHP said.
