ABC Unified School District Hosts Districtwide College Fair

One of the major goals in ABC Unified School District (ABCUSD) is focused on college and career readiness. On October 22, 2016, ABCUSD held its first district-wide College Fair with students from Artesia HS, Cerritos HS, Gahr HS, Tracy HS and Whitney HS. The College Fair was held at Whitney High School’s Gym and Multi-Media Arts Center. Admissions representatives participated from over 80 schools, including Ivy Leagues, UC’s, CSU’s, community colleges, out-of-state colleges, engineering and medical focused colleges, as well as military academies.

Thousands of students and parents moved from one booth to the next to engage in one-on-one conversations with college representatives, who are experts in their field. Administrators and counselors from all ABCUSD high schools were available throughout the morning to answer questions.

Mrs. Sasha Leonardo, Whitney High School’s counselor, led two workshops. (1) Navigating Naviance for the College Search Process, and (2) Creating a Competitive College Application. The success of this first district-wide College Fair was evident in the comments. One parent said, “We are so thankful for the opportunity to meet with so many college representatives. I hope the district-wide College Fair is continued to allow my younger daughter to participate in the future.” A college representative stated, “This is the best College Fair I have ever been a part of.” As a result of the ABCUSD College Fair, the students are more prepared to select the college that best fits their needs. Additionally, students have the tools to complete a competitive college application.
