By Brian Hews

More than 160 firefighters were battling “major” fire right now at a recycling yard in the Harbor Gateway neighborhood of Los Angeles.

The blaze was reported about 10 a.m. on South Normandie Avenue.
The location is about two miles southwest of the interchange of the 405 and 110 freeways.

The recycling yard was in flames; no nearby structures were threatened, according to the LAFD.

A huge plume of black smoke could be seen for miles.

It was not immediately clear what was fueling the flames, but the color of the smoke suggested that synthetic materials were burning, said Margaret Stewart, an LAFD spokeswoman.
