Cerritos Senior Center to Celebrate 20th Birthday

By Brian Hews

The Cerritos Senior Center is about to turn 20 years old, and they are planning a party for the entire community, regardless of how old you are.

The Cerritos Senior Center located at Pat Nixon Park on South Street between Bloomfield Avenue and Norwalk Boulevard, will be celebrating its 20th Anniversary on January 29th.

Since 1994 the Cerritos Senior Center has been a place for local senior citizens to socialize, participate in educational and recreational programs and receive social services.

According to city spokesperson Annie Hylton, “the Cerritos Senior Center has been a focal point for community involvement for many senior patrons age 50 years and older.”

This past week, city officials sent out a media statement that highlights the services provided since opening in1994:

More than 446,500 daily nutritional lunches have been served and nearly 212,250 home-delivered meals have been provided to home bound seniors.

More than 38,575 information and referral questions have been answered.

Nearly 18,000 seniors have attended special event dances.

More than 984,840 seniors have attended exercise classes.

More than 303,000 workout visits have occurred since the 2006 opening of the 5,000-square-foot Fitness Center expansion.

Senior Center Volunteers have contributed over 192,100 hours of service.

Also impressive is that approximately 2,700 private weekend events have been held at the Cerritos Senior Center.

The Cerritos Senior Center is located at 12340 South Street and the phone number is (562) 916-8550.

The site of the Cerritos Senior Center is on the same location where former United States First Lady Patricia Ryan Nixon grew up as a child before marrying President Richard M. Nixon.

Several artifacts from Mrs. Nixon are on display at the location.
