In an effort to recruit additional professional educators, the ABC Unified School District will be holding a “Teacher Interview Event” on Tuesday, April 16, beginning at 3 p.m. at the District Office Hallways.

Board President Celia Spitzer announced the event at a recent meeting and stressed the need to hire more teachers here in the Cerritos-Artesia-Hawaiian Gardens area based district.

“I am sure this is good news for teachers out there looking for jobs,” Spitzer said.

When asked by ABC Board Clerk Lynda Johnson if the event is open to the public, Dr. Carol Hansen who is overseeing the project, replied, “This is an interview event by invitation only.”

Hansen said that the Recruitment Team and Human Resource Department are in the process of screening applications and that they will notify qualified applicants for interview thru email. “The number will be trimmed down to about 100 applicants for a variety of positions both in the elementary and secondary levels in different schools around the District,” added Dr. Hansen.”  She urged interested applicants to turn in their applications.

Hansen also said the first-round interviews during that period of time will be conducted by the District’s team of administrative officials and principals by an interval of 15 to 20 minutes. “The final interviews will be done by the principals only and final selection, she continued, will be implemented by members of the Human Resource Department who will look into the credentials and background checks of selected candidates.”

ABC President Spitzer recalled the days “when money was still flowing so that applicants can bring in their job portfolios and resumes and paper screening and interviews were done all at the same time.”

Present during the interview event will be representatives from teacher union groups and from the district’s business department to help explain the benefits associated with the job.

Dr. Hansen pointed out, “we need to highlight what we can offer and also advertise and promote the ABCUSD as a top choice. Although there are limited openings in the profession, competition is stiff when it comes to certain areas like specialized education, math and higher sciences.”
