Shoemaker Bridge Demolition Continues Tuesday Night on I-5 Freeway in Norwalk/Cerritos/La Mirada area

NORWALK – The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will continue with a  full
freeway closures on the Santa Ana Freeway (I-5) on Tuesday March 12 to complete the Shoemaker Avenue Bridge demolition. Only two freeway lanes will be closed nightly on Monday, March 11 and Wednesday March 13.

The Shoemaker Avenue Bridge demolition began on Feb. 24 with deck removal. The next phase of 
demolition includes removing the bridge girders (horizontal beams) and bents (vertical columns).
The following closure schedule is weather permitting and is subject to change:
Full Freeway Closures: Northbound I-5 from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Sunday March 10 and Tuesday March 12

• Full freeway closure from Carmenita Road to Rosecrans Avenue. All northbound I-5 traffic
must exit at the Carmenita Road off-ramp.
• Closed Connector from westbound SR-91 to northbound I-5. Motorists will be detoured to
use westbound SR-91 to northbound I-605 to northbound I-5.
• Northbound I-5 on-ramps will be fully closed at Valley View Ave., Alondra Blvd. and
Carmenita Rd.
• Southbound I-5, up to two lanes will be closed from San Antonio/Norwalk Blvd. to Carmenita
Lane Closures: Southbound I-5 from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Monday, March 11
• Two lanes closed from Rosecrans Ave. to San Antonio/Norwalk Blvd. Only one lane open.
• The on-ramps will be closed at Rosecrans Avenue and South Firestone Boulevard.
Lane Closures: Northbound I-5 from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Wednesday, March 13
• Two lanes closed from Norwalk Blvd. to Rosecrans Ave. Only one lane will be open to motorists.
• The on-ramp will be closed at Carmenita Road.
The $214 million I-5 HOV Widening/Rosecrans/Bloomfield/Shoemaker Bridges Project is one of six
segments as part of the I-5 South Corridor Improvement Projects from the Orange County line to the San
Gabriel River Freeway (I-605). The scope of the ‘Rosecrans Project’ is to add one carpool lane and one
general purpose lane in each direction from Shoemaker Avenue to Silverbow Avenue, a distance of 1.2
miles. The project also includes reconstructing three bridges at Rosecrans, Bloomfield and Shoemaker
avenues and a pedestrian overcrossing at Silverbow Avenue to accommodate a wider freeway,
reconfiguring the ramps at Rosecrans Ave., upgrading and realigning Firestone Boulevard frontage road.
Flatiron West, Inc. of San Marcos, CA. is the contractor on this project.
