A local man could be getting a second chance at life after an apparent suicide attempt failed.
On Sunday at approximately 5:27 PM, deputies from the Pico Rivera Station were dispatched to the Rio Hondo Bridge, at Whittier Boulevard, Montebello, after receiving a call about an “attempted suicide by hanging.”
When the deputies arrive, they observed a male Hispanic adult who was hanging by his neck on the north side of the bridge.
According to Lieutenant Keply of the Pico Rivera Sheriff’s Station, the five deputies at the scene collectively pulled the lifeless victim up and over the guard rail and began life saving measures.
As two deputies struggled to remove the makeshift noose from the victim’s neck, a third deputy began cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
Unable to untie the noose, made of a heavy gauge electrical cord, the deputies used a utility knife to cut the cord from the victim’s neck, which instantly opened his airway.
Following approximately three minutes of CPR, the deputies began to see signs of life. The victim was transported to Beverly Hospital, where is listed in critical condition.
The incident is currently being investigated by Montebello Police Department.
The name of the victim has not been made public.
