Assemblywoman-Elect Cristina Garcia Hits Ground Running After Landslide Win

Newly elected California State Assemblywoman Cristina Garcia has hit the ground running just hours after her landslide victory over Republican businesswoman Patricia Kotze-Ramos.

Garcia was in Sacramento meet with other newly elected legislators on Wednesday and Thursday to start getting familiar with her new surroundings.

Garcia told Los Cerritos Community Newspaper on Friday that she wanted to personally thank the voters.

“First and foremost, thank you to everyone who practiced their civic duty, irrespective of how they voted,” Garcia said.

“Moving forward, I’m excited by and humbled by the privilege and trust the residents of the district have given me. I’m ready to put the campaign behind, leave party politics behind, and get to working for all the great residents of AD 58,” she said.

“I promise to work hard and bring lots of passion to the job, in exchange I hope the residents give me time to grow into my new role,” Garcia stressed.

Garcia also addressed the ongoing issue of voter distrust and lack of confidence with California lawmakers by stating “my priorities will revolve around rebuilding the public’s trust in our government, finding ways to bring more jobs and businesses to our district, and fighting to protect funding for all levels of education, in particular programs for adults who have been misplaced in the workforce.”

“I have seen first-hand how cuts to adult school, vocational and technical training, and community colleges have disproportionately affected our district as technology has forever changed the skills needed to be a productive member of society,” she told LCCN.

“At the same time that more and more adults are looking for means to get a new set of skills and be a productive member of society, we are closing the doors on them, this makes no sense,” Garcia concluded.

Voters in the Cerritos, Artesia, and Bell Gardens based district overwhelming voted for Garcia who earned more than 72% of the total vote, and said she “couldn’t be more thrilled.”

Garcia and dozens of new lawmakers will be officially sworn into office in Sacramento in early December.
