For over a month now, meals have been offered to seniors 50 and over at the Cerritos Senior Center on Tuesday and Wednesday between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.
But some residents are not happy with the quality of the meals.
The meals are provided by the Human Services Association (HSA) and partly subsidized by the City. City staff assists with the distribution of the meals and the suggested donation is $2.25 per meal and typically distributed in packages of 5 meals.
One resident listed the content with comments: 1 pear, hard and turning discolored, teeth breaker; 2- package cookies, hard as concrete- teeth breaker; 1- slice of wheat bread- thin as silver dollar, possibly run over by road-rage car tires;1- instant potatoes water down and transparent; 1-rubbery/dehydrated meat patty, would not even cut; 1-serving discolored green peas. Sorry peas have no vitamins. No dessert!

Don’t think you did your due diligence on said subject, prior to drafting this e-letter. You should know about senior menu, since you are in the Grocery Bus. Federal Guidelines have changed/ updated yearly, the menu city has chosen to deliver to the seniors, is outdated 20 yrs old menu. New Federal Guidelines have been drastically updated. Both Los Alamitos Medical Center and UCI Medical Center ( Nutrition PHD’s ) put your CURBSIDE CHOICE MENU, under CLINICAL microscope and said the frozen menu has dead vitamins, empty calories, and ghostly nutritious. Seems like each city’s choice menu, depends on who contracts the meals, management and overseeing panels, and educated on the key expectations for the reciprocates population. I did extensive research on each CURBSIDE MEAL tray.
Todays Menu : Lean Meats-Poultry-Fish | Your Curbside Menu: Meat with cereals, fried meat, & processed Poultry. No fish. No 100% protein. AKA: Processed Junk Food Mentality.
Today Menu Fresh Veggies-Fruits | Your Curbside Menu: Canned Veggies, No soft fruits and over ripe spoiled/rotten fruits, no salads.
Today Menu: Whole Grain | Your Curbside menu: Brown bread with no grains no fiber, processed starches with no values.
Today Menu: Beans and legumes | Your Curbside menu: Nothing.
Today Menu: NO transfat | Your Curbside menu was hi in transfat preservatives plus had micro-organisms found in expired shelf life foods.
Today Menu: Pastries with grains and natural fruits | Your curbside menu: Denture breaking wavers with transfat, no grains, no fiber, hi in processed flours/ sugar.
Today Menu: Natural Beverage | Your curbside menu: Milk which is not tolerated by many for lactose intolerance.
……….. Remember, many school campuses across the nation are in the process of serving more healthy choice menus, Cerritos must start a more proactive menu for our seniors. Seniors can easily be silenced because of: dementia, ageism, poverty income levels, lack of mobility and infantilism and lack of education/ interest levels. NOW STAY AT HOME ATTITUDE, is just another element to air brush seniors out of society.
Bottom line: “ Safer at Home” does not spell processed junk foods. For many of us nearing centurion seniors, this is the only avenue for daily diets and can be very harmful for us seniors, who are relying on Council, to guide us thru this pandemic landscape. This diet you are serving, does not meet the National/ Federal Guidelines for seniors home bound.
