The March 2017 Norwalk municipal election will see two four year seats and one two year seat up for grabs as candidates will fight for Marcel Rodarte’s open two year seat and Cheri Kelley and Mike Mendez’ four year seats.
Documents obtained from the Norwalk City Clerk show that, as of December 5, 13 candidates have pulled papers with intent to file, with one candidate actually filing.
The list of candidates include Henry Cardenas the lone candidate who has actually filed, Kelley, Marcel Mercado, Jack Andula, and Margarita Rios, current school board member of the Norwalk-La Mirada USD.
Rios, a police sergeant with the LA Unified School District, pulled papers to run for the open Rodarte seat.
Others include Candy Martinez, Thomas Vernola, Ken Menchaca, Albert Uribe, and Leroy Baca.
In a surprise filing, current Cerritos College Trustee Sandra Salazar, who recently won her Area 6 seat in November, pulled papers for the four-year city council seat.
Also, long time Norwalk employee Tony Ayala pulled papers as well as Jennifer Perez, both applying for the four-year office.
The deadline to file for the two-year seat is this Friday, December 9; the deadline to file for the four-year seat is Wednesday, December 14.
