UPDATE: Deputy Involved Shooting on Woodruff Avenue in Bellflower Results in Death of Male Suspect; Two Deputies Injured

UPDATED AT 8:40 a.m.:

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s have issued the following statement to members of the media:

“Deputies arrived and were confronted by the suspect, a 57 year old man, who was incoherent and foaming at the mouth.  A physical altercation ensued; one deputy was punched in the head and the other was pushed into a water fountain. Deputies tried to use a taser to subdue the man but it had no affect.  At some point during the fight, the suspect reached for one of the deputy’s holstered firearm. Fearing for their safety and the safety of those around them, the other deputy shot the suspect.”

“The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. The deputy who had been punched in the head was taken to a local hospital where they were treated and released. The other deputy was treated for minor injuries at the scene. ”

UPDATED at 8:35 a.m.:

NBC News in Southern California is reporting that the two officers involved in the shooting death were female Deputies assigned to the Lakewood Station.

The incident apparently took place outside of an assisted living home.  Apparently, the man was foaming at the mouth and refusing deputies’ orders moments after they had arrived on the scene.  The suspect apparently hit one of  the officers in the head, causing her to nearly black out.

NBC is also reporting that the man also tried to grab the other deputy’s gun. An attempt by the deputies to stun the man with a Taser failed.  The dead man was a resident at the home, and his identity has not been released to members of the media.
