What kind of flowers are used for Dia de los Muertos?
Marigolds, represent the fragility of life. The marigold most commonly used in Dia de los Muertos celebrations is the Targetes erecta, Mexican marigold or Aztec marigold, otherwise known as cempasuchitl or flower of the dead. Marigold flowers, is believed that the spirits of our departed loved ones come to visit during the celebration and marigolds are used to help guide the spirits with their vibrant color.
**Usually this late in the season, the marigold plant and flowers, are past their prime, as this is a summer flower. First Lady variety, takes a while to grow, usually couple of months and many times needs to be staked, as the flower is heavy and is tipsy in light loam soil. Does not like heavy rain nor our Santa Ana Winds. Plant thrives in full sun, heat and loves water, not drought flower. Plant does have a bad smell and snails n slugs hang out around the plant. There is a gigantia variety, which grows couple of feet in height (plus) , not used much in Socal.
Orange- Yellow flower which is starting to come in to season now, would be Calendula, AKA: Pot Marigold, by some. Artesia Cemetery, Cerritos, Ca. has decorated the frt entryways with Orange Calendula, but have a tenancy to attract mildew and bugs if not in full sun. Can take lite frost.
Many TV shows, over this past weekend, displayed orange flowers at events all over LA/OC.
Did hear through the whisper group, not everyone was happy about any type of celebrations at this cemetery, since many locals have loved ones here. Local Woman’s Club each year, heard decorates some of the tombstones which are held by some members who fought in the civil war. One local resident contacted me, saddened about this event, since her grandchild laid to rest here.
Sidebar, some cemeteries have church services on this day, wondering if any clergy or local chaplains were notified about this event? Residents should mark their calendars, many WLA organizations have bus tours for famous movie-stars graves and places of death. Read that Long Beach has some tours also. Something Cerritos Seniors should look in to, very educational.
I personally drove thru the cemetery, somewhat disappointed that the grass was not 100% green, since the county spent money on updating the irrigation system. Maybe there is something wrong with the water supply to the cemetery. City park located on the south end of the cemetery, sure looked good, like all of our parks. Both residents in Cerritos and Artesia, must visit this city park, it is awesome.
