American Red Cross Artesia/Cerritos Field Representative Phil Wendel was pleased to receive a $465 check from ABC Adult School ESL classes Nov. 3 at the Cuesta campus where he thanked the students and teachers for their generous donation.

Wendel promised that the money “will be put to good use to assist in the care of victims from the Apr. 25 eathquake in Nepal.”

ESL Resource Teacher Velia Paredes said she was so proud of all of the students “for opening up their hearts and wallets for such a worthy cause.”

ABC Adult School Principal PaoLing Guo also thanked the students for their generosity and said, “We have great students at ABC Adult School, and when they heard of the terrible occurrence in Nepal, they wanted to get involved in some way to make a difference in peoples’ lives.”

The April 2015 Nepal earthquake killed more than 9,000 people and injured more than 23,000. It occurred at 11:56 Nepal time on Apr. 25, with a magnitude of 7.8 and a maximum Mercalli Intensity of IX (Violent). It was the worst natural disaster to strike Nepal since the 1934 Nepal–Bihar earthquake.

Hundreds of thousands of people were made homeless with entire villages flattened, across many districts of the country. Centuries-old buildings were destroyed. Geophysicists and other experts had warned for decades that Nepal was vulnerable to a deadly earthquake, particularly because of its geology, urbanization, and architecture.
