About 35 members, spouses and guests of the La Palma-Cerritos Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) gathered at Cerritos Park East on Sunday, August 16, 2015 from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. to enjoy their Annual Summer BBQ.

With temperatures in the high 90’s to 100 degrees, they were glad to be protected by the overhead shelter and cooled by occasional breezes.

In spite of the heat, everyone enjoyed the barbecued chicken, salads, and desserts that members provided along with lots of cold drinks. It was a nice time to just relax and visit with members and their spouses. There was also opportunity to meet four potential new members, with one potential member coming all the way from West Covina.

After lunch, President Paulette Smith welcomed everyone to the BBQ and thanked everyone for coming. A working session ensued, with planning for a Fall Fundraiser as Paulette introduced Carol Marsh, Chairman of the Local Scholarship Committee, and Barbara Atherton and Barbara Dunstan, Co-Chairs of the Fall Fashion Show, Luncheon and Silent Auction Fundraiser.

Barbara Dunstan distributed flyers and asked members to tell their friends and relatives to save the date of Saturday, November 21, 2015, starting at 11:00 a.m. for a wonderful Fashion Show, Luncheon and Silent Auction Fundraiser at the Cerritos Sheraton Hotel at 12725 Town Center Drive in Cerritos.

The theme for table decorations will be “Women Are Super-Heroes” with a focus on Women from History who worked for equal rights for women.

Carol Marsh has been working hard soliciting donations for the Silent Auction and asked members to continue to get donations for the Silent Auction and be ready to volunteer to help decorate baskets in November.

Barbara Atherton announced that fashions for the Fashion Show will be provided by Steinmart for women and Old Navy for children. She will be asking members, their children and grandchildren to volunteer as models for the Fashion Show.

La Palma-Cerritos AAUW members invite their family, friends and members from the community to come and support the November Scholarship Fundraiser. They hope that the Fall Fundraiser will be very successful so that many women at Cerritos College will be awarded scholarships in the Spring of 2016. Tickets are already available for a donation of $60.00 each. Persons interested in coming to the Fashion Show, Luncheon and Silent Auction, or donating items for the Silent Auction, can contact Barbara Dunstan at 562-404-4760.

Another tiered social group. Some women gain success via education, while many others find success being attractive, access to money and successful business endeavors. Not all woman are university grads and have become very successful. Feel this group is sending the wrong message.
