ARTESIA – A Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy based in the Lakewood Station and patrolling in Artesia on Sunday night, sustained a minor leg injury after he was struck by a suspected drunk driver, Hews Media Group-Community Newspaper has confirmed.

HMG-CN spoke to at least five different sources and has confirmed that the suspect is Shane Matos, 25, who is a lifelong resident of Artesia.

Matos apparently crashed his car into the deputy’s parked car at 9:20 p.m. at 18030 Clarkdale Avenue.

The name of the deputy injured has not been officially released by members of the Sheriff’s Department as of Sunday night; however several sources told HMG-CN that the deputy’s name is Michael Calderon.

Watch Commander Sergeant Lim of the Lakewood Sheriff’s Department said that the name of the suspect or deputy were not “officially available” to the public when interviewed by HMG-CN via telephone on Sunday at 8:30 p.m., and would not confirm or deny the identities of both parties.

Calderon was apparently standing next to his parked patrol car and was responding to an unrelated call when his marked patrol car was struck by Matos, HMG-CN learned.

Matos lives less than a half of block where the incident took place and is a popular figure in the Artesia community.

Calderon was transported to a local hospital in Lakewood for treatment and is expected to make a full recovery.

HMG-CN has learned that Matos was arrested on suspicion of felony DUI and is being held in custody.

HMG-CN will have additional updates as more details are learned.

“Matos lives less than a half of block where the incident took place and is a popular figure in the Artesia community.” Guess he is gonna be REAL popular now.. no mention if he has wants, warrants, insurance, license, or registration. But that would not be too PC now would it..

Hey detective jack ass. I no him personally. He’s a good guy. A popular figure because hes a well liked guy from a wonderful family. He has no prior record. Keep making assumptions moron. Ppl makes mistakes. Luckily nobody got seriously injured. Everyone will learn from this and move on.

      • We don’t take kindly to threats Mr. Lima. You are shooting the messenger, we are just reporting it. I am sure MADD and families that have lost loved ones to drunk drivers would not be happy with your comment.

        • M.Lima says:

What he did was wrong. I’m not denying that. I also threatened no one. Just want people to not bash a persons past because of a horrible mistake.

        • EB says:

I’m amazed at what passes for a “good guy” or a “wonderful family”

  • Danny from Artesia says:

Come on M. Lima, GET REAL, okay so it’s a shock to learn that a drunk driver from a “wonderful” family ran into a deputy sheriff with his car. M. Lima, I sure it was also quite a shock for the “wonderful” family of the officer who was be hit by this good guy drunk driver. The deputy could have been killed. Horrible mistake,I agree, please don’t stick up for this criminal, thank God the officer survived.
