HMG-CN Earns Four Los Angeles Press Club Award Nominations

Hews Media Group-Community Newspapers has been recognized with four finalist nominations by the Los Angeles Press Club for the 57th Annual Southern California Media Awards.

HMG-CN Publisher Brian Hews was nominated for awards in the categories of Hard News Coverage, Best News Feature (Under 1, 000 Words) and Best Investigative Series.

HMG-CN also earned a nomination for Best Personality Profile.

LA Press Club President Robert Kovacik announced the list of nominations this past Friday.

Hews’ explosive article entitled “California State Assembly Speaker Implicated In Central Basin Water Scheme” involving Speaker Perez, California State Senator Ronald Calderon and former Assemblyman Thomas Calderon earned a top nomination in the category of Hard News Coverage for newspapers under 50,000 circulation.

Hews was also named as a finalist in the category of Best News Feature (Under 1,000 words) for their exclusive article “Undercover FBI Agent Rocky Patel Used Dal Rae in Pico Rivera to Stage Calderon Sting Operation.”

The writing duo also was honored as a finalist for Best Investigative Series for their groundbreaking work entitled “Dirty Water: The Central Basin Municipal Water District Saga.”  Hews won the same category in 2013 for their series on “Corruption Inside the Los Angeles County Assessor’s Office.”

Hews earned a nomination in the category of Best Personality Profile, Under 1,000 words for his article on Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Candidate Bob Olmstead.  The sit down interview with the tough spoken candidate called “Bob Olmstead Doesn’t Miss a Punch.”

Among the journalist organizations across the country who judged the entries included journalists from the Alaska Press Club, Arizona Press Club, Atlanta Press Club, Chicago International Press Club, Cleveland Press Club, Connecticut Press Club, Denver Press Club, Florida Press Club, Houston Press Club, New Orleans Press Club, Southeast Texas Press Club, St. Louis Press Club and Syracuse Press Club.

The Awards Gala will be emceed by actor Charles Shaughnessy and will be held on Sunday, June 29 at The Millennium Biltmore Hotel, downtown Los Angeles.

The 56th Annual Southern California l Journalism Awards is dedicated to the late iconic journalist Mark Lacter.

Also being honored at the event that night: reporter Ann Curry from NBC; Maria Shriver, with The Shriver Report; Khaled Abu Toameh with the Jerusalem Post; Michael Bloomberg and Matthew Winkler, Bloomberg News.    Bloomberg is the former Mayor of New York City and Shriver is the former First Lady of California.
