Steven Dwayne Brown Charged in Long Beach Murder of Teacher Kellye Taylor

Steven Dwayne Brown, a 50-year-old man accused of fatally stabbing a teacher in front of her students at a park in Long Beach was charged today with capital murder, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.

Joanne Baeza, assistant head deputy of the Long Beach Branch Office, said Steven Dwayne Brown (dob
7/8/63) is expected to be arraigned at 1:30 p.m. in Department 1 of Los Angeles County Superior Court, Long Beach Branch. Brown is charged with one count of murder with a special circumstance allegation of lying in wait. The complaint further alleges that Brown personally used a deadly and dangerous weapon, a knife.
Brown has four prior felony convictions out of Los Angeles County, including residential burglary,
robbery and possession of a controlled substance, according to the criminal complaint. The alleged
convictions occurred between 1986 and 1998.

Brown is accused of stabbing Kellye Taylor, 53, a teacher at Huntington Academy, in the neck on Oct. 11. Brown allegedly attacked Taylor while she was with students and other teachers at Orizaba Park in Long Beach. The defendant was in a relationship with the victim’s daughter, prosecutors said.

If convicted as charged, the defendant faces a maximum sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole or death. A decision on whether to seek the death penalty will be made at a later date.

Brown is being held without bail. The case remains under investigation by the Long Beach Police
Department.
