The Cerritos City Council recently awarded a contract in the amount of $290,141 to Dalke & Sons Construction, Inc. for the construction of a new Teen Studio at the Cerritos Library. The construction project is under way and is expected to be completed in July.

The Teen Studio will provide a dedicated, multi-purpose space where teens can participate in activities that encourage their educational, creative and personal development.

The furnishings, equipment and floor plan were influenced by suggestions from Cerritos teens who participated in design development meetings.

The area will provide teens with access to state-of-the-art technology, group and individual study areas and the Cerritos Library’s young adult collection.

Technological equipment will include 18 Apple computers, two 40-inch computer surface tables, three 65-inch interactive wall-mounted smart boards, two 32-inch e-posters and a multi-function printing device.

The 18 computers will offer leading-edge software and Internet access. Internet connectivity will also be available for personal laptop and notebook connections through data ports offered at tables throughout the area. Wi-Fi access will also be available.

The Teen Studio will provide seating for up to 66 teens and the tables, computers, computer surface tables and bookshelves in the room will be accessible and compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The young adult collection will consist of some 7,000 items, including classic and popular fiction, study guides, graphic novels and periodicals.

The room will also include a desk for a Cerritos Library staff member to be available to assist the teen patrons.

The room will be located in the area that formerly housed the Cerritos Library’s multimedia collection, which has been relocated.

Funding for the majority of the construction cost has been earmarked from a reimbursement of maintenance and servicing funds the City recently received from Los Angeles County as part of the Safe Neighborhood Parks Propositions of 1992 and 1996.

The Teen Studio design was developed by CWA AIA Inc based out of Glendale and designed the Cerritos Library.
