42 Counts In Bell Case Declared Mistrial by Judge Kathleen Kennedy

By Brian Hews

In a stunning decision, Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Kathleen Kennedy has declared a mistrial on the remaining 42 counts for five former Bell city council members just moments after the jury foreman said they were deadlocked.

The vote was 9 to 3 in favor of guilt against former Councilman Victor Bello, George Cole, Oscar Hernandez, Teresa Jacobo and George Mirabal. Each of the former city council members are past mayors of the tiny enclave and on Wednesday, the same jury convicted them on a number of counts related to misuse of public funds, and acquitted them on others.
