Second Homeless Person In LA County Set On Fire In A Week

By Brian Hews

For the second time in one week, a homeless person has been set on fire in Los Angeles County.

Members of the Los Angeles Police Department arrested a man on Thursday for allegedly setting a 67-year-old woman on fire who was sleeping on a Los Angeles bus stop bench.

Associated Press is reporting that the attack occurred shortly after 1 a.m. outside a Walgreens store near Van Nuys Boulevard and Sherman Way.

A witness said he saw a man come out of the store and pour something on the woman who had been sleeping on a bench before striking a match and setting her ablaze.

AP is also reporting that the suspect in custody is in his 20’s.  The woman who was set on fire was taken to a hospital and listed in critical condition.

Last Wednesday, a 55-year-old Norwalk man identified as Barton Pierce was set on fire as he slept in a sleeping bag next to a donut shop off of Firestone Boulevard and Pioneer Boulevard.

No suspect has been located for that crime.

Pierce remains in critical condition with second and third degree burns to more than 70 to 80 percent of his body.

Captain Pat Maxwell of the Norwalk Sheriff’s Station told Los Cerritos Community Newspaper in an interview late Wednesday night that he is “confident” that an arrest will be made regarding the case involving Pierce.
