HAWAIIAN GARDENS — Local students headed into the new school year with brand-new shoes thanks to a community partnership between the City of Hawaiian Gardens, the Gardens Casino and Fishers of Men West Coast.
The Shoe Giveaway Event was held Aug. 29 at the C. Robert Lee Activity Center, where students were individually fitted for new shoes rather than simply handed boxes to take home.
Students from Furgeson Elementary, Hawaiian Elementary, Melbourne Elementary and Fedde Middle School participated in the event, with separate distribution times scheduled for each campus.
Families also had an opportunity to visit resource tables and connect with local organizations offering community services and assistance.
Fishers of Men West Coast, a nonprofit organization that uses fishing and outdoor activities to connect with individuals and support local communities, partnered with the Gardens Casino and the city to organize the giveaway.
The Gardens Casino sponsored the event as part of the partnership aimed at helping Hawaiian Gardens families prepare for the new school year.
ABC Unified School District thanked the city and its community partners for supporting local students and families.
