Rio Hondo College send out a letter yesterday indicating that a cadet and their police academy, along with a family member tested positive for the coronavirus on March 27.
The letter stated that the kid that has been in self isolation with his family since Monday, March 23 when one family member experience flu like symptoms.
No other kid that in the police academy has reported symptoms.
The letter stated, “Los Angeles County has joined a growing list of California regions where residents have tested positive for COVID-19, validating the decision by the Río Hondo Community College District to extend online instructions and student services through May 9, 2020.
While these actions minimize the chance of exposure to our faculty, staff and students, I am saddened to report that late this afternoon we were notified that a cadet in the Police Academy tested positive to COVID-19 today, March 27 along with a family member.
The cadet has been in self-isolation with his family since Monday, March 23 when his family member experienced flu-like symptoms. The likelihood the cadet contracted the coronavirus from this family member is high as the family member’s employment requires contact with hundreds of individuals on a daily basis.
The College is currently following the protocols and guidance from the California Department of Public Health and the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office. No other Police Academy cadet or staff have reported experiencing any flu-like symptoms. Appropriately, all public areas of the AJ Building used by the Police Academy will be deep cleaned and disinfected immediately.
By sharing this information, we hope to provide a reminder of the importance of following the guidance of public health officials to slow the spread of the illness. Please continue to follow social distancing recommendations and the statewide stay-at-home order.
