Carmenita-geddon: Full Overnight Northbound I-5 Closure Planned This Week

Full Overnight NB I-5 Closure Planned This Week; Bridge and Ramp Openings at Carmenita Road

NORWALK – The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will close all northbound lanes of Interstate 5 between Rosecrans Avenue and Carmenita Road as crews prepare to fully open the Carmenita Road bridge, the permanent northbound on and off-ramps at Carmenita Road, and the intersection at Excelsior Drive and Carmenita Road. Additionally, Caltrans will close the westbound State Route 91 connector to northbound Interstate 5.

Specific closure times are:

Thursday, June 16 at 11:00 p.m. to Friday, June 17 at 5:00 a.m.
Friday, June 17 at 11:00 p.m. to Saturday, June 18 at 7:00 a.m.

Motorists traveling northbound on Interstate 5 will be directed to exit at Valley View Avenue to access the northbound Interstate 5 on-ramp at Rosecrans Avenue. Motorists traveling westbound on State Route 91 will be directed to continue westbound and take the northbound Interstate 605 connector to reconnect with northbound Interstate 5. Please see the attached detour map, and plan to use alternative routes.

The Interstate 5 Santa Ana Freeway Carmenita Road Interchange Project, in the cities of Santa Fe Springs and Norwalk will replace and reconstruct the existing two-lane overcrossing with a 10-lane (five lanes each direction) structure. The project will reconfigure the on- and off-ramps, and realign frontage roads. The project will widen Interstate 5 by adding one High Occupancy Vehicle Lane (also known as HOV or car pool lane) and one general purpose lane in each direction. Go to my5la.com and QuickMap for more information.

Caltrans advises motorists to “Be work Zone Alert.”
