Lynwood City Council pushes $60 million dollar trash contract in 30 days

By Brian Hews

Residents upset and fear that trash company already chosen.

Lynwood, CA August 7, 2013: The City Council voted 3 to 2 to approve a 30 day select process for their 10 year residential and commercial trash contract, estimated at $60 Million dollars.

At a special council meeting on July 31st, Mayor Alatorre, Mayor Pro Tem Rodriguez and Councilman Morton approved a timeline that requires trash companies 2 weeks to submit their proposals and 2 weeks for City Staff to review submitted proposals before selecting a trash company at the regular council meeting of September 3rd.

Councilwomen Castro and Santillan-Beas voted “NO” on the timeline issue. Councilwoman Castro is requesting a timeline that allows trash companies 90 days to submit their proposals and 90 days for City Staff to review submitted proposals.

Councilwoman Castro has received hundreds of calls from upset residents, questioning why the 30 day timeline. Many residents expressed fear that the City Council has chosen a trash company and that is why it only needs 30 days.

Adding to this dilemma, the City has been conducting a trash audit for the past two years and cannot finalize it, if this 30 days selection process continues. Two independent auditing firms are still computing numbers to determine if the current trash company owes the City money or if the City owes the current trash company money, estimated at several millions dollars.

At the regular council meeting of August 6th, Mayor Alatorre, Mayor Pro Tem Rodriguez and Councilman Morton voted to cancel three Town Hall Meetings that listed trash as the topic for discussion with the public. The three Town Hall Meetings were scheduled for August 7th at Lynwood Park, August 13th at Yvonne Burke/Ham Park and August 14th at Adolfo Medina Park. See attachment.

“This is exactly what happened ten years when this trash contract was approved. I will not repeat the same mistakes of the past!” said Councilwoman Castro.

Councilwoman Castro asks every resident and members of the media to attend the regular council meeting of August 20th, 11330 Bullis Road, at 5:30 pm. During the public comment portion of the meeting, every resident can express their anger about this trash issue directly to the entire city council.
