Jackie Lacey scores Magic Johnson endorsement in race for LA County DA

By Brian Hews

Los Angeles County District Attorney candidate Jackie Lacey scored one of the biggest political endorsements of the season on Monday when legendary athlete and respected businessman Earvin “Magic” Johnson signed on to support her campaign that is now entering the final week.

In a statement from her campaign: “Johnson joins a growing group of bipartisan business and community leaders in supporting Lacey in her bid to become Los Angeles County’s next District Attorney.”

“Jackie Lacey is, by far, the best candidate for Los Angeles County District Attorney,” Johnson told Los Cerritos Community Newspaper.

“She has a proven record of working with the community to implement groundbreaking programs that offer nonviolent offenders, including veterans, a one-time opportunity to turn their lives around. We need someone like Jackie who is innovative and dedicated to improving public safety for us all,” Johnson said.

Lacey also scored the endorsement of Los Cerritos Community Newspaper last Friday.

Her campaign on Monday reminded members of the media that she is a 26-year veteran of the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, who “has worked her way up through the ranks from front-line prosecutor to second-in-command of the nation’s largest local prosecutorial office.”

Lacey was born and raised in Los Angeles, attended Dorsey High School and graduated from USC Law School. Lacey joined the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office in 1986. She has prosecuted hundreds of serious criminal cases, including Los Angeles County’s first race-based hate crime murder against three Nazi Low Riders. Lacey has been in leadership positions for the past 11 years.

Lacey is running against Prosecutor Alan Jackson in next Tuesday’s election.
