A deejay, concert host and producer, Beirne was the on-air personality at Oldies Radio KRTH-101 in Los Angeles for 29 years. It was the longest continuous stint in FM radio history. A news director and television weatherman, Beirne won the L.A. Press Club Award for “Best Entertainment Reporting” and was “Billboard” magazine’s “Newscaster of the Year.”
The library exhibit, which reflects Beirne’s career working with the legends of Rock ‘n’ Roll, includes vintage posters from concerts and films featuring Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra and Jan and Dean. An iconic blue hat worn by rockabilly pioneer Gene Vincent is also displayed with photos of Vincent and his band. Beirne’s collection also includes autographed photos of musicians – including Glen Campbell – and tickets (with prices of $2) for Alan Freed Rock ‘n’ Roll shows.
The exhibit will be featured in Cerritos Library’s Main Street area until the end of 2016.
On Saturday, December 31, the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts presents “Rockin’ New Year’s Eve,” hosted by Beirne. The lineup includes The Kingsmen (“Louie Louie”), The Marcels (“Blue Moon”) and The Tokens (“The Lion Sleeps Tonight”). Also performing are Vocal Group Hall of Fame inductees The Four Preps (“26 Miles to Santa Catalina” and “Big Man”) and The Chordettes (“Mr. Sandman” and “Lollipop”). The show ends at approximately 10:30 p.m. and will not include a New Year’s countdown at midnight. To purchase tickets, call (562) 916-8500 or go to cerritoscenter.com.
