Two Killed by Wrong-Way Driver in Lakewood

Two people were killed Tuesday night after a wrong-way driver plowed into another car in Lakewood, authorities said.

The crash occurred about 9:30 p.m. near Paramount and Del Amo boulevards, according to Sgt. James Jobling of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

According to the preliminary investigation, a person driving the wrong way smashed head-on into another car; the two people in that vehicle were fatally injured, Jobling said.

Both were pronounced dead at the scene. Their identities were not released pending notification of family.

Information on injuries to the wrong-way driver was not immediately available, and sheriff’s investigators were looking into whether the driver was under the influence of alcohol or another substance, Jobling said.

  • DUI says:

LAKEWOOD >> Two people were killed Tuesday night and a third person was hospitalized in what authorities are calling a possible DUI crash.

Authorities identified one of those killed as Brian Urquia, 30, of Long Beach, the driver of one vehicle, who died at the scene, the coroner’s office reported. His passenger, a woman in her 20s from Long Beach, also was killed. Her name was withheld, pending notification of her relatives.

The other motorist was treated at a hospital for unspecified injuries.

The crash at the intersection of Paramount and Del Amo boulevards was reported at about 9:30 p.m., according to Sgt. J. Jobling of the sheriff’s Lakewood Station.

Two compact cars were involved in the crash, which Lakewood Station Sgt. Steve Moses described as “head on.” The two people killed were the occupants of one of the vehicles.

The surviving person is the suspected drunken driver and is currently listed in stable condition. Sheriffs have not released that person’s name.

A man identifying himself as Urquia’s uncle on Facebook said in Spanish the family is devastated. He offered prayers for his parents and thanked the community for it support.

Urquia “has left us momentarily, but his memory and his always smiling presence accompany us always,” Juan Urquia wrote.

Del Amo Boulevard West of the 605 Freeway looks fine. Appears to be a street in America. Take the same street Del Amo Boulevard East of the 605 to the La Palma / Del Amo Bridge, Del Amo Boulevard is trashed especially by Artesia High School. Take the same street Del Amo Boulevard East of the Del Amo /La Palma Bridge, it it looks like newer city in America.

What is with these cities, why we can’t take a major arterial Street such as Del Amo Boulevard / La Palma Blvd; which connects Los Angeles International Airport to Riverside County Line, passes Los Angeles County and Orange County and stops at Yorba Linda borderline / Riverside to San Bernardino County, be more universal for motorists and pedestrians. Over couple doz. school compounds are located on Del Amo-La Palma Blvd.

Bus transportation varies throughout Del Amo Boulevard. Some of these areas, the street trees are so low, hi tall trucks cannot pass.

What is with the gateway cities and Cal Trans, a major streets which moves 200,000 cars, can not be in better shape?

How many MVA have occurred on Del Amo Bridge, airlifted to UCIMC and for past 50 yrs, no improvement to breached bridge. How many elected candidates have promised up improvements to road and bridge, nothing for past 5 decades.
