Cooling centers available throughout Cerritos

Staff Report

To assist the community in keeping cool during the current hot weather, the City of Cerritos provides free access to community centers, which are open throughout the day and provide basic activities, air conditioning, water and seating.

The Cerritos Senior Center is open Monday through Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and is a cooled environment for seniors, age 50 years and older.

The Cerritos Library is open Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Additionally, the Los Cerritos Center is open Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. with “soft seating” throughout the mall, water and plenty of tasty options for you to purchase at the food court.

In extreme heat conditions as determined by the Los Angeles County Department of Health and Human Services, or if there is a need, the City of Cerritos will activate a cooling center at City facilities such as the Cerritos Gymnasium, community centers or the Cerritos Senior Center. The facility will be determined based on need and availability, providing as well the option of swamp cooler installation Denver. For more information on the activation of these cooling centers, please contact the Cerritos Sheriff’s Station at (562) 860-0044.

For more information about keeping cool during the summer, visit Southern California Edison’s website at www.sce.com/outages.

  • Retired from Rockwell says:

Hmmm, Cerritos 50,000 residents, aprox 50% seniors, only few cheesy cooling stations. What are the 2 major shopping malls doing for relief centers, plus the millions of tax revenue from the Cerritos Auto Mall Owner, where CM/Art Gallucci is on the board, plus supervisor Don Knabe……sure dont read good for Cerritos seniors.

  • Tom Voth says:

Well, according to latest US Census data Cerritos has about 18% residents over 65, so to say half of Cerritos is Seniors is a little off. Even if you add in all those between 50 and 65 you get less then 40%. I think Cerritos does very well by it’s Seniors, nice city to live in.

During La Cuesta Villa Proposal, 47% of city was over 50YO, that was the senior age bottom line. When did seniors move to 65YO? Joseph Cho use to say, 47% city belong to seniors, that is why he campaigned for senior commission. Just recently city has grown to populous of 50,000.

Seniors need an adjustment for utilities.

City of Seal Beach, Long Beach and Woods, all do more for seniors, compared to Cerritos.
