California Chrome gets ready for the Kentucky Derby.

Note:  California Chrome DID IT!  He won the Kentucky Derby!

By Brian Hews

Today California Chrome is hoping to become the latest American Idol of Horse Racing Fame to win the 140th Kentucky Derby and his has a huge “hometown follow” right here in the Cypress , Cerritos area area.

California Chrome was literally born and raised in Cypress, just four miles from Cerritos, Artesia, Hawaiian Gardens and Lakewood

The hot horse is the winner of the 2014 Santa Anita Derby and the 2014 San Felipe Stakes and he is viewed as the favorite to win the 2014 Kentucky Derby later today.

According to the website Wikipedia: “He is trained by the father-son team of Art Sherman and Alan Sherman, the colt is the first horse they have ever entered in the Kentucky Derby, though as a young man, the elder Sherman was the exercise rider for the 1955 Kentucky Derby winner Swaps, one of only three California-bred horses to have previously won the Kentucky Derby.”

Not bad for a local kid right here from our hood, so to speak.

This horse is on a roll.

A grandson of Pulpit, the chestnutcolored horse was named for his flashy white markings, called “chrome” in the world of horse aficionados.

Wikipedia also states that “California Chrome was a large foal at birth and was the first foal of his dam, Love The Chase. He was nicknamed “Junior” in honor of his sire, Lucky Pulpit. He was sent to the Shermans’ training stable as a two year old due to their good reputation for patiently developing young horses.”

California Chrome is ready to go.

The Kentucky Derby has arrived.

Watch it live on NBC.
