Colby Fire Prompts Lakewood Officials To Cancel Youth Sports

By Brian Hews
Officials in the City of Lakewood halted outdoor activities on Thursday, January 16 due to air quality concerns from the Colby Fire that is burning out of control nearly 40 miles away.
Lakewood spokesman Bill Grady told members of the media in a statement that
the closure includes outdoor Lakewood Youth Sports programs and adult sports programs.
Grady said that recreation activities and fitness classes held outside are also cancelled.
“This announcement is due to potentially unhealthful air quality due to the Colby Fire, burning in the Angeles National Forest above Glendora. The South Coast Air Quality Management District has issued a smoke advisory today for portions of Los Angeles County. Air quality may reach the unhealthy range or higher in these areas due to the Colby Fire,” the statement read.
