NLMUSD, Teachers Reach Tentative Agreement

The Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District and Teachers Association of Norwalk-La Mirada (TANLA) have reached a tentative contract agreement that will boost teacher salaries and health benefits.

The tentative agreement includes a package that covers:

• A 3.125 percent salary increase;
• An ongoing District contribution of $9,800 per employee toward health care costs;
• An ongoing $600,000 infusion of funds into the Health and Welfare Self Insurance Fund, which will mitigate any increase in total premium costs from plan year to plan year, greatly reducing out-of-pocket expenses for employees;
• Coverage of all employee out-of-pocket health care costs during the months of October 2013 and November 2013; and
• A one-time contribution of $140,000 toward cost-of-living adjustments to be paid this month.

“After months of negotiations with TANLA, we feel that the Tentative Agreement satisfies the needs of both the teachers and the District,” said Superintendent Dr. Ruth Pérez. “At the negotiations table, talks have been professional and positive every step of the way. We are all pleased that we have come to a conclusion that is agreeable and beneficial.”

The agreement is scheduled to go to the NLMUSD Board of Education and TANLA’s nearly 1,000 members for ratification. If approved, the agreement will go into effect in January.

“I want to thank the negotiations teams on both sides for taking on this task and finding a resolution,” said Board of Education President Ed Hengler. “These talks are never easy, but necessary to ensure our ultimate goal is reached – a great education for our students. Both sides coming to an agreement makes that goal easier to reach.”
