Don’t become a victim of vehicle burglary
Vehicle burglaries are crimes of opportunity, but by taking simple steps you can help reduce the chance of becoming a victim.

Out of Sight, Out of Crime

Many vehicle burglaries are a result of items that are left in plain sight in the passenger compartment of a vehicle. Never leave valuables such as purses, wallets, GPS devices, cell phones, laptops, or anything else of value in plain view in your vehicle. Take the items with you when possible. It only takes a few moments to break into a vehicle and take your property.

Commercial parking lots such as gyms and shopping malls are high target areas for vehicle burglars who may be watching where you conceal items inside of your vehicle prior to exiting. Always be mindful when entering a parking lot of suspicious persons that may be lingering on foot in the area or watching the parking lot from inside of a vehicle.

Security & Your Peace of Mind

Always make sure to properly secure your vehicle windows and door locks, even when parking at your own residence. If you have an anti theft system, be sure to always arm it. When possible, park in well lit, heavily traveled areas of commercial parking lots. When parking in your driveway at home, motion sensor lights may deter potential burglars.

Take precautions when holiday shopping

Suspects commonly case parking lots for shoppers who return to their vehicles to load up their vehicles with valuables, then return to finish shopping. Plan ahead and make smaller shopping trips. If you must store valuables in your vehicle, lock them in your trunk and keep them in a non-visible place. Park in well-lit areas and remain alert in parking lots. Scan the area surrounding your vehicle both when you park and when you return to your vehicle.

Contact the La Mirada Community Sheriff’s Station if you observe suspicious activity immediately (562) 902-2960. Obtain a description of the person, a vehicle description, and vehicle license plate if possible.
