Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide detectives are continuing their investigation into circumstances surrounding a deputy-involved shooting that occurred on Saturday, October 12, 2013, near the intersection of Fairford Avenue and Foster Road, Norwalk that resulted in the shooting of a suspect attempting to evade law enforcement officials.
Sheriff Detectives have told Hews Media Group-Community News that at about 4:06 P.M. on Saturday, Deputies from the Norwalk Sheriff’s Station were on patrol in the community when they attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a vehicle for traffic violations.
The vehicle failed to stop and continued to drive Westbound in the 11300 block of Foster Road at Fairford Road.
“As the vehicle drove west, the suspect, a 23-year-old Hispanic male, tossed a black semi-automatic handgun from the passenger window,” said Lieutenant John Corina of the Homicide Bureau Detective Division
“The vehicle drove a short distance and quickly pulled over to the curb. Suddenly the suspect exited the passenger side of the vehicle at which time a deputy-involved shooting occurred,” Corina said.
The suspect, whose name was not immediately released by officials, was struck one time in the upper torso, and was transported to a local hospital and treated for his injuries. As of Sunday morning, the suspect was listed in stable condition and is expected to survive.
Cornia also stated that there were two other persons in the vehicle but they were not injured, and both of them were detained for questioning as witnesses.
It is also being confirmed by officials that a loaded handgun was recovered from the parkway where the suspect had discarded it.

Whenever an Officer Involved Shooting occurs involving Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies and it results in the wounding of a suspect, multiple independent investigations immediately begin at the scene. These include separate investigations by the Office of the Los Angeles County District Attorney in addition to investigations by Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau and Internal Affairs Bureau. Attorneys with the Los Angeles Office of Independent Review also respond to the scene and have full access to the facts known to the Sheriff’s Department throughout every phase of these investigations. Once concluded, every aspect of the shooting is reviewed by the Sheriff’s Executive Force Review Committee.
