Niemes Elementary School launches an innovative composting program with a community garden day on Saturday, October 5.

The community is invited to join in with this ‘Gold Award’ project as Celine Chen spearheads a new composting program at Niemes Elementary School with Ms. Melissa’s Garden Club and the Scout’s project.

Volunteers are encouraged to bring their work tools, gloves, hats and re-usable water bottles to help prune fruit trees, dig out weeds, harvest soil from compost bins and collect and save seeds.

The event will take place in the garden and nature center from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. and will include compost workshops. The address is 16715 Jersey Ave in Artesia.

Girl Scout Troop 5623 will also be at the event to speak with interested students, parents, and community members about the benefits of composting. Boy Scout Troop 693 will also be on site building the composting bins and helping out.

All volunteers will be provided with water and a light lunch.

Already considered a “green,” environmental science and technology magnet school, Chen is hopeful that this highly beneficial program will begin with the 6th grader, but will continue to spread to other grade levels as the program continues to grow.
