Construction Tie Ups Expected in Norwalk This Week Due to 5 Freeway Work

5 freeway signNORWALK and SANTA FE SPRINGS – The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has scheduled a series of overnight lane and ramp and city street closures this week at various locations on the Santa Ana Freeway (I-5) and on local streets in Norwalk and Santa Fe Springs.

The work involves continued demolition work on the Alondra Bridge, resetting k-rail, restriping and paving the center median. The following work and closures are part of the I-5 South Corridor Improvement Projects to widen the freeway and add one carpool lane in both directions from the Los Angeles/Orange County line to I-605:

Nightly, Monday, July 15 through Saturday morning, July 20

Lane Closures:
Southbound I-5 – midnight to 5 a.m. – up to two lanes CLOSED from Pioneer Blvd. to Rosecrans Ave.
Northbound I-5 – midnight to 5 a.m. – up to two lanes CLOSED from Norwalk Blvd. to Pioneer Blvd.

Ramp Closures
Southbound I-5 – 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. – the off-ramp at Rosecrans Ave. will be FULLY CLOSED.

Nightly, Wednesday, July 17 and Thursday, July 18

Lane Closures:
Southbound I-5 – 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. – up to two lanes CLOSED from Rosecrans Ave. to Alondra Blvd. to place K-rail (concrete barriers) on the outside shoulder.

Other upcoming closures and work in progress on the I-5 South Corridor:

On-Ramp and Local Street Closure
• Tuesday, July 16, 2013 at 7 a.m. – the northbound I-5 on-ramp at Adoree Street (a local street in Norwalk) will permanently close. Also, a portion of Adoree St., from Kalnor Ave. to Paddison/Zeus avenues, will close. (The closure limit includes the on-ramp at Adoree St.) Construction will begin on the new Adoree St. frontage road abutting northbound I-5. Upon completion, Adoree St. will extend from Norwalk Blvd to Imperial Highway.
Motorists will have access to I-5 on-ramps at Imperial Highway, Pioneer Blvd. and Norwalk Blvd.
Crews will be working on local streets and in the surrounding area to realign and extend Adoree St. from Norwalk Blvd. to Imperial Highway. Access for emergency services, residents and businesses will be maintained. Water trucks will be used for dust control during working hours. Noise will be experienced.

•    Southbound I-5 Pioneer Boulevard Off-Ramp will be CLOSED starting in early August

The southbound I-5 off-ramp at Pioneer Boulevard will be closed starting early August until spring 2014. Traffic will be detoured to use the southbound I-5 off-ramp at Norwalk Blvd. Prior to the Pioneer Blvd. off-ramp closure, the Norwalk Blvd off-ramp will be restriped and the signal at Union St./San Antonio Blvd. will be modified to accommodate increased traffic demand.

•    Beginning in mid-September – Adoree St.,(a local city street in Norwalk), from Kalnor Ave. to the corner of Paddison Ave./Zeus Ave,. will fully close through late February 2014. The work on Adoree St. will be completed in stages and by mid-September, Adoree St. will be fully closed. A temporary one-lane road will provide Adoree St. residents with driveway access.

Work in progress:
•    Pile driving for soundwall construction – Southbound I-5 near Imperial Hwy/Pioneer off-ramp: Pile driving equipment and cranes continue working daily in a construction zone on Dollison Dr., between Dune St. and the Dollison cul-de-sac. Expect noise and vibration from the equipment. Much of the work takes place daily from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., with occasional weekend schedules. This work began on March 25 continues through Sept. 30.

•    Full Closure of the Shoemaker Avenue Bridge between Rosecrans Ave and Excelsior Dr continues until spring 2014. The Shoemaker Bridge fully closed on February 19 and bridge demolition completed on March 14. Much of the reconstruction work takes place daily from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., with occasional weekend schedules. The new bridge is expected to complete by mid-2014.

•    Pile driving for the Shoemaker Avenue Bridge reconstruction – Southbound I-5 between Shoemaker Ave. and Loch Nevis Ave: Crews, pile driving equipment and cranes continue working in this area. Much of the work happens daily from 7 am-5 pm, with occasional weekend schedules.

•    Pile Driving for the Carmenita Road Bridge is ongoing at the intersection of Firestone Blvd, west of Carmenita Rd and abutting southbound I-5.

•    Full Closure of Alondra Boulevard and the Alondra Bridge: between Freeway Dr. and Marquardt Ave. in Santa Fe Springs, began on June 10 and continues until late 2014 when the new Alondra Bridge structure is expected to complete. Demolition of the Alondra Blvd. Bridge began on June 14 and is expected to complete in late July. Reconstruction work will follow.

•    Full Closure of North Firestone Blvd frontage road between Carmenita Rd and Rosecrans Ave began on Feb. 19 for realignment. The road between Gracebee Ave. and Loch Nevis Ave. (local city streets in Norwalk) will reopen in late summer 2013. The remaining roadway will permanently close.

•    Full Closure of Dollison Drive, continues through Sept. 2013 while Dollison Dr. is being realigned. This closure began on March 4. Dollison is a local street in Norwalk that abuts southbound I-5.

The $1.6 billion Santa Ana Freeway (I-5) South Corridor Improvement Projects extend nearly seven miles from the Los Angeles County/Orange County line to I-605 to widen the freeway, bridges and overcrossings to add one High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lane and one general purpose lane.
