A Los Cerritos Community Newspaper review of the voting history records of the  two candidates running in the May 21st election to become the next Mayor of Los Angeles, Wendy Greuel and Eric Garcetti, has revealed that current city Controller Wendy Greuel was registered as a Republican for more than 13 years.

Nothing unusual was found in relation to Garcetti’s voting records.

LCCN requested and received both Greuel’s and her rival Councilman Garcetti’s entire voting history from the Los Angeles County Registrar of Voters Office in Norwalk on Thursday morning.

Greuel has been touting herself as a “staunch Democrat” who has mustered up the support of former President Bill Clinton, US Senator Barbara Boxer, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, Congressman Brad Sherman, Congresswoman Janice Hahn, Congresswoman Judy Chu, and Congresswoman Linda Sanchez.

Greuel’s website claims, “Wendy Greuel is a Democrat… and has spent her career fighting for Democratic values and working with Democratic icons including Tom Bradley and Bill Clinton.”

“It is shocking that Wendy Greuel was a registered Republican for 13 years during a period of nasty attacks on our community, by California Governor Pete Wilson and his other anti-immigrant allies,” said Cristina Vazquez, President of the Laundry Workers Union.

Vazquez has been a resident of Highland Park for the past 30 years.

Greuel first registered to vote on April 3, 1979, at age 18 as a Republican when she resided in Granada Hills.  Documents show that Greuel remained a member of the Republican Party until June 29, 1992, when she re-registered as a Democrat at a new residence in Van Nuys.

Mike Garcia, President of the SEIU United Service Workers West told Los Cerritos Community Newspaper “while we were fending off extremist attacks on our community, Wendy Greuel sat on same side of those who perpetrated these attacks.”

Documents from the Registrar Recorder also show that Greuel updated her voting registration on two other occasions, on September 19, 1994 and again on April 12, 2004.  Both times she marked “Democratic Party” as her affiliation and she listed her locations as going from Studio City to Encino.

Garcetti’s records show that the current Los Angeles City Councilman has been a lifelong “Democrat.”  Garcetti states on the Voter Registration documents that he was born on February 4, 1971.

Garcetti registered to vote for the first time on April 24, 1989 as a “Democrat.”  Documents show that Garcetti has changed his registration five additional times to reflect changes of address at different locations in Los Angeles.

Los Cerritos Community Newspaper left several messages with the Greuel campaign on Thursday afternoon for comment.  The calls were not returned.

Bill Carrick, Senior Advisor to Garcetti’s campaign told LCCN, “Wendy is trying to pass herself off to voters for being something she is not. Wendy was a Republican when she worked for Mayor Tom Bradley, and she was a Republican when Bill Clinton first ran for President.  Wendy was a mature adult into her 30’s when she decided to become a Democrat.  She needs to explain why she moved from political lane to political lane.”

I don’t quite comprehend why she is not fit for the office of mayor if she was once one of those “evil Republicans”. I also don’t comprehend why Garcetti is more fit for office just because he has never changed his spots? The issue should be what they are going to do for LA to straighten out the mess that the last mayor has left it in. Both of these candidates have taken enough union money to satisfy the apparent “requirement” for holding office in this city. I guess after that you will have to look into whether either of them took “evil corporation” money. Now that would surely be their downfall!
