Fullerton Library Awarded Gold for Sustainability Design and Leadership

First Public Library in Orange County to Receive Gold Certification

Fullerton, Ca – The Fullerton Public Library Conference Center was recently awarded the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold Certification by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). The USGBC recognized the Library Conference Center as a pioneering example of sustainable design and as a leader in transforming the building industry. The Fullerton Public Library is the first public library in Orange County to receive the LEED Gold rating.

According to Maureen Gebelein, Fullerton Library Director, “This award from the USGBC is an incredible accomplishment and recognition for our entire City. Our commitment to sustainable energy in our new construction is a reflection of the leadership and vision of our Library Board and the Fullerton City Council.”

The USGBC pointed to the fact that the Library Conference Center final rating reflected a whopping 67 documented and approved points, which corresponded to the gold certification level under the LEED New Construction rating system. These points included areas of water and energy efficiencies, sustainable sites, indoor environmental air quality, innovation, materials and resources.

“We hope to see many more public libraries in Orange County pursue such certification,” added Gebelein. “Orange County should be the Gold Standard for all libraries in California.”
