Suspected hostage-taker pleads to Whittier library caper

WHITTIER – A 31-year-old Whittier man pleaded no contest today to holding a woman captive with a pair of scissors at the Whittier Public Library last year, District Attorney’s Office announced.

Ignacio Gabriel Munoz pleaded no contest to one felony count of assault with a deadly weapon, one count of kidnapping and 12 counts of making criminal threats. He was immediately sentenced by Norwalk Commissioner Michael Schuur to 18 years in state prison, said Deputy District Attorney Brandon Wong.

Munoz entered the library at 7344 Washington Avenue shortly after 12:30 p.m. on May 10, 2011. He grabbed a woman who was there with her students and forced her out of her chair, holding a pair of scissors in front of her face. When police arrived, he allegedly demanded a pound of kush, a car and the Mexican Army to pick him up.

In exchange for his plea, the remaining five felony counts were dismissed.
