A Norwalk man has been arrested after he allegedly car jacked a vehicle that was being driven by an off-duty South Gate Police officer.

According to Norwalk Sheriff’s Captain Patrick Maxwell, the incident, took place at around 4 a.m. Saturday morning, when the officer, who was not identified, was driving north on Norwalk Boulevard in his personal vehicle at the intersection of Cyclops Street when two Hispanic men stepped out into his lane of travel.

The officer slowed his vehicle to allow the two men to cross the street. The two males stopped in his lane of travel and one of the males pointed a handgun directly at him.

Fearing that the individuals were trying to stop him and take his vehicle, the off-duty officer accelerated around them and then called 911.

Norwalk Sheriff’s Station deputies quickly responded and observed three Hispanic males running east on Cyclops Street. A containment of the area was established (the area surrounded by deputies and patrol cars) and K-9 units were requested from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Special Enforcement Bureau.

During the K-9 search of the area, a loaded 9MM pistol was recovered.

As the search continued, the suspect was located in the rear of a residence in the 12200 block of Cyclops Street and was arrested without incident.

The suspect, Nicholas Andres, a 20-year-old resident of Norwalk, was identified by the victim as the suspect who had pointed the firearm at him. No other suspects were located. Andres was placed under arrest and booked at Norwalk Station for Assault with a Deadly Weapon. He is being held on $50,000.00 bail.
